Lodge and reconcile BAS with PAYG Withheld and PAYG Installment in Australia with Zoho Books

BAS return in Australia

The typical BAS return has three components:
  • GST - this comes directly out of Books
  • PAYG Withheld - this is the payroll withheld component, either you book this after each pay-run as an Expense to Liability account (to be set up), and then Liability account to Bank account withdrawal - or, keeping it simple, Expense account to Bank account withdrawal.
  • PAYG Installment - this is a pay as you go installment that is booked to Advance Tax. At the end of the year, the Advance Tax is used for the Tax payment - the remainder is either tax payable or a tax return.
At the BAS Payment time - in order to reconcile the three payments - you create two additional payments from your bank account - the PAYG Withheld (either as an expense to the PAYG Withheld expense account directly, or to the Liability account if you use that), plus an expense directly to the Advance Tax account for your PAYG Installment.

When reconciling the complete BAS payment, you select on the right hand side the three transactions.

Then - upon selecting, the total amount should balance 0 - and you are done. If you have not yet added the PAYG Withheld or PAYG Installment, you could create a new transaction in that screen as well - you cannot proceed if the Balance Pending is not 0
